Tom Clancy’s The Division prend la forme d’un jeu de rôle d’action (mêlant jeu de tirs et jeu de rôle), multijoueur et jouable en ligne, qui plonge le joueur dans un univers vaste et ouvert, aux allures post-apocalyptiques.

The division en quelques mots
Librement inspiré de la Directive 51 et de l’opération Dark Winter (qui anticipent différents scénarios de gestion de crise en cas de catastrophes majeures ou d’attaques bioterroristes aux Etats-Unis), Tom Clancy’s The Division imagine la ville de New York dans un futur proche, après la diffusion d’un virus mortel conçu pour être propagé par l’intermédiaire de billets de banque le jour du Black Friday et de ses soldes massives. Alors que toutes les institutions se sont effondrées du fait de la pandémie, la ville de New York est placée en quarantaine et est en proie au chaos. Les agents dormants de la « Division » entrent alors en action pour tenter de restaurer l’ordre public.
Le joueur incarne l’un de ces agents de la Division et devra notamment remplir une série de missions musclées. Pour restaurer les bases de l’Etat (symbolisées par une base des opérations dont il faut progressivement réactiver les différentes fonctions). Pour protéger les citoyens de nombreuses « factions ennemies » : des gangs de rue, des prisonniers évadés, des groupuscules armés prônant un retour de l’ordre par la force. Ou encore des « nettoyeurs » prétendant lutter contre la pandémie en éradiquant les malades. Mais en luttant aussi contre des agents renégats incarnés par d’autres joueurs.
Un contenu violent et réaliste
The Division est un jeu de tirs à la troisième personne (le gameplay laisse la part belle à l’action), mâtiné de jeu de rôle : la progression du personnage et l’amélioration de son équipement militaire sont des composantes importantes du titre. Le joueur peut par ailleurs choisir la spécialisation de son personnage parmi trois orientations disponibles, tantôt Médicale (afin de soutenir ses coéquipiers), Technologique (pour utiliser des gadgets et appareils militaires) ou enfin dite de Sécurité (reposant sur la protection grâce notamment à des boucliers d’intervention).
Tout en explorant des zones urbaines dévastées après une attaque bioterroriste, les joueurs participent à des combats tactiques réalistes (via une gestion dynamique des impacts de balles, effets de lumière ou de fumée, entre autres).
Les personnages sont essentiellement confrontés à des armes à feu fidèlement modélisées à partir d’armes réelles (pistolets, fusils d’assaut, mais aussi grenades ou lance-flamme…). Mais aussi à des haches ou des battes de Baseball, pour éliminer leurs adversaires. Les phases d’affrontement sont soulignées par une gestion réaliste des tirs, des cris de douleur ou des éclaboussures de sang. Certaines séquences de jeu confrontent le joueur à des cadavres ligotés ou pendus, voire à des charniers. Dans diverses missions, le joueur peut être amené à essayer de secourir des otages. Des scènes cinématiques illustrent ainsi ponctuellement des otages ligotés, poignardés ou abattus d’une balle dans la tête.
Dans The Division, la violence est notamment restituée par un contexte post-apocalyptique oppressant, du fait de la pandémie et du nombre de morts dans les rues. Pour autant, l’approche du jeu est très manichéenne : le joueur incarne un héros ordinaire dont le rôle est de protéger les innocents (sans possibilité de les attaquer) et lutte contre des stéréotypes de « méchants ».
Un jeu clairement destiné aux adultes : parents, soyez vigilants
Classé PEGI 18 notamment du fait de son niveau de violence, son ambiance oppressante et des propos grossiers tenus par certains personnages, The Division est un jeu destiné aux adultes. Les parents doivent donc se montrer vigilants car les contenus sont de nature à heurter la sensibilité des plus jeunes.
The Division est par ailleurs un jeu multijoueur, jouable en ligne. Le jeu s’articule autour deux principaux modes de jeu : une campagne scénarisée dans laquelle le joueur évolue en coopération avec d’autres participants et dont les mécaniques encouragent à jouer en groupe. Un mode de jeu dans lequel les joueurs s’affrontent entre eux. Les joueurs sont alors confinés dans une zone spécifique, la Dark Zone, optionnelle mais où se trouve le meilleur équipement du jeu). Et où les « agents » incarnés par les joueurs peuvent se trahir et rivalisent entre eux pour s’approprier le meilleur équipement militaire.
Le joueur sera donc régulièrement confronté à d’autres joueurs, et sera amené à échanger, notamment vocalement au cours d’une partie. Les joueurs s’exposent donc à certains débordements inhérents à la partie.
